Congratulations, Explorer Families!

Last night, September 25, 2019, the Natomas Unified School District Board of Trustees unanimously voted to approve our Westlake Charter School Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade Program. Today we officially begin the work to open the greatest high school in Sacramento.

We have been working on this project for many years, and are extremely thankful to each community member who has contributed to this exciting moment. We would like to thank our WCS Board of Directors, our amazingly supportive WCS families, and the incredible WCS Staff who have been collaborating on this project for years. As this exciting new work begins, we will need continued teamwork from our entire community during each of the next steps as well.

We will be launching a series of opportunities for families to get involved soon, so keep your eye on the Westlake Weekly! For today, let’s just celebrate together that Westlake Charter High School has been approved! Congratulations, Explorer Families!

We thought we might answer a few questions about the school while we had your attention!

Q: When will the High School open?

A: Westlake Charter High School will open in just under two years. Our first 9th grade class will enter in the fall of 2021. That means if you are in 7th grade today, you will be our first 9th grade class.

Q: Where will the High School be located?

A: While we are still in negotiations, we know this is an incredibly important question. What we can tell you is that we have a short term plan for opening in the fall of 2021, and a long term plan that includes a permanent location. As a part of our negotiations, both the short term and long term locations are within very close proximity to our current K-8 Campus.

Q: What will make the High School program unique and special?

A: We are not only opening a high school, we are expanding our mission and educational program from a successful K-8 school to a K-12 school. Our mission statement guides us to, “create inspiring adults with the Academic and Social-Emotional readiness to lead as Global Citizens.”

Academically, we are committed to building a program that prepares students for the highest quality colleges and the most inspiring careers. This academic guarantee is only possible if we commit to building the social-emotional readiness in our students that they will need to thrive in the fast paced and ever changing world they will inherit. To do this, Westlake Charter High School will focus on creating experiences for our students that allow them to grow beyond academics, to build the cultural competencies offered by the rich diversity of our community and to master the skills of communication, collaboration, creativity and critical-thinking.

Q: What will the school culture be like?

A: Our Westlake Charter High School will be small and safe yet have all the school spirit of a power-house school!  We will offer clubs, activities, associations, exciting electives and a competitive sports program to ensure that school is a place where our students want to be every day.

Thank you for all that you do for Westlake Charter School! And as always…
