Thank you, families, for making Back To School Night a success! You showed up to learn in your classrooms, you volunteered for WAVE events, you got fingerprinted so that you could chaperone on field lessons, and most importantly, you came together to build community!  We can’t wait to see how amazing the Back to School Night will be on our 5th-8th grade campus next Wednesday.

Westlake 3rd Grade students began exploring 3D Digital Design using TinkerCad and are beginning to use our new 3D Printers! Welcome to the 21st Century! Let’s Explore!

PBLOur amazing 5th grade team of teachers planned an awesome PBL project to launch the school year. Sally Hoyt shared, “Students have to pretend to have a shipwreck on a previously undiscovered island. They have to figure out what the climate of that location is, how landforms and water sources will influence their survival, and figure out how they will survive.Right now they are designing their islands. I love the feeling of collaboration and student choice.”

In Megan Ellis’ Humanities class, students were reflecting, writing, and talking about the books they are reading. It is powerful to watch students as they explore new books and share their summaries and reviews of books with teammates!

Announcements:

For the Whole School

Supply and field lessons Donations: It is very important to Westlake Charter School that every student is prepared to learn and has all the materials they need each day in class. To ensure that no student ever comes to a day of learning without materials, Westlake buys everything students need for class in advance. One advantage is that families don’t have to clip coupons and run from store to store to find the right supplies. Westlake receives an education discount with our vendors, so our students get all the supplies they need at the best possible prices. If families would like to make supply and field lesson donations to help our school with these costs, we ask that you use our online donation process.  Click Here to make a donation for your student or any student who may need your support.

Club Launch: We are beginning the process to launch our parent-lead after school clubs! These were a huge success last year and we would love to see them grow this year. This program is a collaboration between our WAVE Parent team and Westlake Charter School’s BASE program. We need parent volunteers who can run an after school club once a week for six weeks! This session will launch the week of October 10th and conclude during the week of November 14th. Click this link for more info!

Spirit Gear Webstore: The Explorer Spirit Gear Webstore is open until September 9th! Get your Fall order in today! Sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats and more are all available on our webstore. Orders should arrive the last week of September. Again, the last day to order is September 9th! Click Here to visit the webstore.

For Del Paso

Parking lot: Families, please remember to bring your placards in your car for all of the students you are picking up.  We will continue to give out reminders for any missing placards; however, starting September 6th, all cars with missing placards will be asked to park in a visitor spot and check ID in the office.  Thank you for working in partnership with us to make our Westlake Charter School dismissal as safe as possible!

Math Monday:–  Please check here  each week for the link to Math Monday.  Come out to Morning Line up on Monday mornings to celebrate math with us.

For Pebblewood

Back to School Night: We are excited to welcome all of our families onto campus this Wednesday, August 31st from 6:00-7:30pm.  This evening will provide an opportunity for you to peek into our programs and get a sense of what your child is experiencing at school. Teachers are eager to share with you about our program and introduce themselves to you!  I really hope to see 100% of our families attend this event.

Chili Cook off: Our 4th Annual Chili Cook Off is coming up! Mark your calendar for Thursday, September 22nd at 6pm. Our 5th- 8th grade classes will be going head-to-head for the title of “Westlake’s Greatest Chili”.  For only $5, you can come and taste all the chili you want and place your vote for the best!  Click here for the flyer! Your Advisory/Homeroom teacher will be sharing information soon about how you can get involved with this awesome community event!
