Celebrations:

Our K-8th grade students participate in enriching Spanish classes each week.  We know that learning a new language takes hard work, dedication, and practice.  Check out this amazing presentation that was created by our middle school Spanish teacher Mrs. Grimaldi. The presentation highlights things you can do to encourage your student to use Spanish outside the classroom! Screen Shot 2016-04-03 at 3.20.04 PM
Screen Shot 2016-04-03 at 3.45.56 PM If you were on campus before the break, you might have seen George Washington, Mae Jamison, or Sir Issac Newton roaming the halls.  All of these “difference makers” were brought to us by the 2nd grade, who spent several weeks studying the ways that their chosen person made a difference.  All of this research came together in the Wax Museum where the students presented their findings.  It was an incredible learning experience.  One 4th grade visitor to the museum said, “I still can remember my entire wax museum presentation!”
Our Geometry students are deep into a PBL project called, “Survival Shelter” where the driving question of “How can we use Pythagorean Triples to construct a stable shelter?” is the goal.  Each team of students is asked to construct a survival shelter using Pythagorean Triples to form right angle triangles that will be used for the walls of the  structure.  Students had to first create a Google drawing blueprint of their structure before they could advance on to creating their projects.  Check out the students hard at work! File_000 (12) Our Get In, Eat, Vamonos campaign continues to shape a positive eating environment in the cafeteria.  Students report “more eating time” and “fewer noise issues!” The Westlake staff is actively engaged in continuing to revisit this campaign to make it even better.  The PBIS team is coming together to work on another campaign to end the school year!  Stay tuned for more information.
We just wrapped up our 2nd Trimester and what better way to do so than to have our students demonstrate the Core Value of being Reflective.  Our students showed this Core Value as they prepared and executed their Student-Led conferences where they reflected on their best work, NWEA results, work habits and set goals for the 3rd trimester.  Our students were prepared, articulate, and stewards of their own learning! Way to go, exceptional Explorers! studentled

Announcements:

For the Whole School

Love and Logic Class: It’s not too late to sign up for our Love and Logic classes that begin this Wednesday, April 6th at 6:00 pm.  Westlake is proud to announce our partnership with the Love and Logic Institute and are excited that our school is hosting a Love and Logic parenting series facilitated by a Love and Logic certified trainer. The cost of the workshop series is only $20 per participant along with a commitment to attend all 5 workshops. Scholarships for the class are available, and childcare will be FREE through BASE with pre-registration, so please do not let finances create a barrier to attending this incredible opportunity. Click HERE to view and print the registration form.  Childcare is available upon request by emailing [email protected]

Blood Drive: Families, please consider donating blood to support our 7th-grade PBL focusing on blood disease and how we can help.  Blood Source will be on our Pebblewood campus in their mobile unit on April 11th from 10:30am – 3pm.  To sign up, visit www.bloodsource.org/drives and enter the location code M954.  You can pick your rewards to redeem for your donation!

For Del Paso

OPTIONAL Spring Picture Day THIS Thursday, April 7th:  Please remember that Spring picture day will be optional this year.  All Del Paso students will have free dress on April 7th, but only students who have prepaid AND filled out this form will be sent to the photographer to have their picture taken. If you would like to have your student’s Spring picture taken by Lifetouch, please fill out this form AND prepay online or send payment in the packet.

Del Paso Road:  On Del Paso Road in front of our campus there is a bike lane and signage posted instructing cars not to stop or park in the bike lane. Please leave the bike lane open when waiting to enter the Del Paso parking lot.  All cars waiting in the turn lane must enter the parking lot as it it dangerous to re-enter traffic from that lane, and even more dangerous for other cars to go around a parked car waiting for a student.  Thank you for your efforts to keep our students and families safe.

Math Monday: Click HERE to participate in Math Monday.

For Pebblewood

Electives: Our next round of electives begin on Monday, April 4th.  Each middle school student in grades 6-8 will participate in an elective class that focuses on our core value of Global Perspective.  At the end of this elective session, we will hold a student showcase night where all students will present their PBL projects to the public during our regularly scheduled Open House event on May 18th.  All students and families should plan to attend, so please mark your calendars now!
Infinite Campus:  We just began our 3rd trimester on Monday, March 14th.  Please remember to check your student’s portal often for grade updates. Just a reminder that grades are updated each Friday by your teachers.
