4th Grade Students in Ms. Hewitt’s class are using College and Career Readiness Skills to move, the age old concept of a Book Club, into the 21st Century using Google Docs! These students are meeting in small groups, taking collaborative notes and sharing their learnings with the whole class through this innovative digital platform. Way to go, Explorers! Hewitt
electives3 Electives1   electives4Electives 2 Our middle school students always look forward to their enrichment/elective class.  In this round of electives, students are participating in various classes including Stop Motion animation, Dance Appreciation, Tween Film Appreciation, Fun Picture Editing, and Lego We Build with Chrome.  Our enrichment/elective classes truly exhibit our Core Value of Joyful Learning!
Walk around the Del Paso campus and you will see several parents and family members volunteering in classrooms, helping out at recess, supporting in the copy room, and opening doors during drop off!  These volunteers enrich so many aspects of our day!  Also a huge shout out to Holly Hein who runs our Six Flags Read to Succeed program.  So many students benefit from this amazing program!  Thanks, Holly! sixflags

The 8th grade PBL Forces showcase night is such an incredible night for students and families.  This night truly is a showcase of student learning! Students confidently show their t-shirts they designed using creativity and play on words showing their understanding of Newton’s three laws. Then students shared their spoken word poetry sharing how forces impact their lives! The students truly shined at this event! Important Information: On Friday, Westlake sent home important information in your student’s backpack. Please make sure to read THIS LETTER and decide if your family wishes to respond. The deadline to respond to this important information regarding the privacy of your student’s records is April 1st.

Seeking WAVE Board Members: Families, our WAVE team brings out the best in our Westlake Community. From organizing community events like the Olympic Triathlon and the Fall Festival, to local family nights like Movie and Bingo Night, this team builds the community that we all enjoy here at Westlake. It is the time of year when the current board transitions and we look for parents who want to lead this volunteer organization. Please, don’t be shy, click here if you would like to learn more about how you can get involved in our WAVE parent organization.

Parents Go To School Night: Families, one thing that makes Westlake unique is our commitment to partnering with parents to help all students. Our “Parents go to School Night” is a great opportunity to build community as well engage in learning lead by our amazing teachers. Our keynote speaker this year will kick off 5:45 PM and teacher’s sessions will begin by 6:15 PM. BASE will be open if you need childcare, so come on out for an engaging evening with our school community!  Check out the detailed flier HERE.

Love and Logic Classes: Westlake is proud to announce our partnership with the Love and Logic Institute and are excited to announce that our school will be hosting a Love & Logic Parenting series of workshops this spring facilitated by a Love & Logic certified trainer. The cost of the workshop series is only $20 per participant along with a commitment to attend all 5 workshops. Classes will begin on April 5th and be held every Wednesday from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Scholarships for the class are available, so please do not let finances create a barrier to attending this incredible opportunity. 2016 International Festival: It’s that time of year again – the IFC is busy planning Westlake Charter School’s 11th Annual International Festival! Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 16th, from 3-7 PM because you won’t want to miss all that we have in store for you! There will be a dessert walk, student performances, authentic dance, American Alley with hot dogs, snow cones and more…and as always, SPECTACULAR Cultural Booths put on by our very own WCS parents! Math Monday: Don’t forget to solve this week’s Math Monday!  Each grade level problem include the common core standard which the question addresses.

Parent Teacher Conferences: Our Canyon Creek Online scheduler opens tomorrow, February 29th. During conferences, you and your student’s teacher will review strengths and areas of growth for Trimester 2.  It is also an opportunity to plan for the 3rd trimester.  Visit the website for directions on how to access Canyon Creek and schedule your student’s conference.

Regional Spelling Bee: On Wednesday, March 2nd, 7th grader, Talhah Bhuiyan, will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee representing Westlake.  His Humanities class will be joining him to support him during the event.  Wishing him the best of luck!

End of the Trimester Conferences: End of the trimester conferences are quickly approaching!  Conferences will be held the week of March 14th-28th.  This year, students in 6th-8th grade will meet with their advisory teacher during conferences.  We are shooting for 100% participation during conferences.  On Monday, February 29th, you can begin signing up for your conference time by going to Canyon Creek, our online scheduler, by clicking this link or going directly to our school website. If you would like to meet with any other teacher besides your advisory teacher, please email your advisory teacher directly and they will work with you to coordinate with your child’s other teacher to attend part of your conference.  You should plan to attend the conference with your student.  A portion of the conference will be led by your student.  They will be preparing for the student-led part of their conference during advisory/homeroom classes.  We look forward to meeting with all families to celebrate your student’s growth this trimester.

Cell Phones:  Please take the time to review the cell phone policy with your child this week.  Phones should be off and stowed away during the school day.  If you need to reach your child during the school day, please call the front office and we would be happy to assist you.
