Our 18th Annual International Festival was an absolute success! Huge shoutout to our WAVE volunteers and Becca Montes for her leadership in making this event a huge success. Thank you to everyone that organized, donated and attended this community event. We truly showed what is possible when school and community collaborate!

Our WCHS Explorers headed out into the world to learn more about college life this week on their college field lessons. Our Ninth grade Explorers visited UC Davis and Sonoma State University and our 10th graders visited San Francisco State University.

Staff Appreciation Form – due Monday, May 8th: Explorers and Explorer Families, it is that time of year when we take a moment to appreciate each staff member for all they do at Westlake Charter. Please use this form to submit a thought of gratitude or praise for anyone on our staff. Grown ups and students can both submit through this form. The form closes at 8:00 pm on Monday, May 8th. Fentanyl Awareness Information Night: Our partners at NUSD are hosting a Fentanyl Awareness Information Night on Monday,May 8, 2023 from 5:30-7:00 PM at the Natomas High School theater located at 3301 Fong Ranch Road. Please RSVP at www.natomasparentuniversity.com

Mental Health Awareness Month: May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and on May 8-12 schools across California are recognizing student mental health week. Mental health specific lessons will be taught by our K-8 counselors throughout the month of May and across both campuses, middle and high school students will get to engage in fun activities during lunch time this week!

WAVE K-12 Game Night: Please join us on Friday, May 12th from 6-8pm in the High School Oasis for a fun evening of games, snacks, and community. We will set up over a dozen games including cornhole, giant Connect Four, giant Jenga, Ladder Ball, and many more. We will have snacks and drinks available, but families are welcome to bring dinner out to the event. This event may be on our High School campus but it is open to all K-12 families. We hope to see you there!

Fireworks Booth: Families we are so excited to partner with our WAVE team to offer a Fireworks booth to our community.  The proceeds from the Fireworks Booth will support our High School Athletics and Activities.  At this time we need both a family or families to lead the fireworks booth and we will be reaching out to our community to sign up for shifts to cover the fireworks sales at the booth. If you are interested in taking a lead role in coordinating the fireworks booth reach out to [email protected].

K-8 Announcements

Open House: Families, mark your calendars! Open House for our K-8 campus will be on Wednesday, May 17th from 5:30-7:00 PM. We are excited for you to come and experience  what your student(s) have been learning about all year. Food trucks, Cafe a la mode, Gondo Fusion, and Richeese Burgers will be available for purchase beginning at 5:00 PM so you can plan to enjoy dinner at WCS as well! 

K-8 Spring Picture Day: Spring picture day is Thursday, May 11th.  All students will have free dress. Only students who have prepaid AND filled out the form will be sent to the photographer to have their picture taken. CLICK HERE if you would like to have your student’s spring picture taken, please fill out the form above AND prepay online or send payment in the packet. All 8th grade students should dress to impress – pictures for promotion certificates will be taken that day.

Jibe Bike Month: For the first two weeks of May (5/1-5/14), we are encouraging all students to hop on their bikes, scooters, skateboards, and roller skates. Each time the student rides we want to track their minutes. All riders receive a custom key chain and the highest participating grade wins a Kona Ice party! 

Spirit Shirt Contest – due Friday, May 26th: It’s time for Westlake to pick the student drawing for next year’s Friday spirit shirt! This contest is open to all Westlake Charter School students. On an 8.5×11 sheet of paper, students should draw a black and white picture of what Westlake means to them. Make sure your drawing includes the school name. Email submissions to [email protected] or turn it into the front office. All entries must be received by Friday, May 26th. Winners will be announced in the Parent Weekly on June 4th.

Core Value of the Month: Perseverance: Being able to persevere to overcome challenges is critical to being a successful global citizen. Students will learn about perseverance in their classrooms with the following video and slides as we close out the school year.

9-12 Announcements

Open House: Save the Date on Wednesday, May 24th from 5:30-7:00 PM.  Join us at our High School campus to check out your students’ classrooms and learn more about what they have been learning this year.

Food Delivery: We are not able to accept food deliveries from services such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc. at WCHS.  Thank you for your understanding and support with this policy.

National Staff Appreciation Week: Please join WAVE as we shower staff with appreciation this week. We have created a fun list of ways your student can show our Westlake Charter School staff how thankful we are for all they do each and every day. Volunteer Hours Log: Now is the time to log all of your hard earned hours for the 2022-23 school year. Hours can be logged for attending WAVE meetings, chaperoning field lessons, volunteering at International Festival, attending Coffee Talks, preparing class work at home, or any other activity supporting Westlake Charter School.  Logging hours not only goes hand in hand with our Westlake Charter School Mission, but it is an integral part of the Charter Renewal process. Kudos:  The 18th Annual International Festival was incredible. The IF committee spent weeks planning and preparing for this event behind the scenes. This committee includes Becca Montes, Sandra Crowell, Amy Wall, Patrick Hanna, Lily Huynh, Randi Jenkins, and Gurpreet Sandhu. Thank you to all booth hosts for sharing your culture with us. Thank you to every family who attended and volunteered at the event. These events are only possible with the help of our entire community!
