Celebrations
Congratulations to WCHS Explorers, Daphne Almario, Sean Gonzalez, Jordan Jackson, and Gabrielle Hernandez Pichardo. These students were selected to showcase their work at the High School Self-Portrait Show at the Verge Center for the Arts Gallery, as hosted by Chalk It Up! The room was electric with people viewing student work from across Sacramento’s schools! Thank you to our Art teacher, Ms. Firsty, for providing our students a platform to express themselves and share their creativity. #WhenCommunityAndSchoolCollaborate
A big round of applause for our second grade Explorers! This week, they truly shined as they shared stories of remarkable difference-makers throughout history. Their preparation, confidence, and enthusiasm were on full display as they presented to their audiences. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible second grade teachers for supporting, guiding, and inspiring our Explorers every step of the way!
We are excited to celebrate our NASA HUNCH Design & Prototyping Team, with students Josiah Aflleje (12th grade) and Nolan Sun (11th grade), along with their advisor Domina Stamas, for being named finalists for their innovative Chess from Trash design. Blending creativity, sustainability, and engineering, their project showcases the powerful, real-world learning happening at WCHS. As finalists, they are now Houston-bound to showcase their work alongside top teams from across the country.

Westlake & WAVE Strategic Alignment Workshops: Westlake Charter School (WCS) and the Westlake Association of Volunteer Explorers (WAVE) have begun to come together for three Westlake & WAVE Strategic Alignment Workshops. As WCS prepares to launch its next Strategic Plan, we are using these workshops to create excitement and alignment about what comes next for Westlake and WAVE in the coming years.
Thank you to everyone who joined us at our first Workshop to engage in thoughtful and energizing conversation about Events at Westlake! Together, we explored what makes our events meaningful and how they shape our community. A few shared beliefs and commitments that emerged were:
- Events create welcoming ways for families to connect and build belonging and pride.
- Student-centered moments drive engagement, and both large and small events matter.
- Sustainability relies on shared ownership across WAVE leadership, staff, and families.
- We honor traditions while evolving, grounding events in our Core Values and continuously reflecting and adapting.
We’re excited to carry these shared commitments forward as we continue this important work together! Join us at our next two Workshops to help envision how Fundraising and Volunteerism help our students and community thrive!

Kudos: A heartfelt thank you to the WAVE families who made time to join our first-ever Strategic Alignment Meeting, co-led by WAVE President Felix Flores and Executive Director Dr. John Eick! It was a rich and meaningful conversation — we reflected on the history of Westlake and WAVE’s events on campus, discussed what our families need right now, and explored how our events can create real impact for our school community in the future. This was a strong first step, and the energy from the room gives us great momentum heading into our next meeting in April, which will focus on fundraising.
