Announcements

Labor Day: Monday, September 7th is Labor day. School and BASE will be closed.

Level 1 Distance Learning Extended:

In July, we let our families know that we would be in Level 1 – Distance Learning at least through September 11th, which is next Friday. Sacramento County is currently on the State of California watchlist which means that our Distance Learning level will be extended. Be sure to read next week’s parent weekly for information on the next checkpoint.

Parent Coffee Talk September 8th at 6PM: Westlake Charter School is hosting a Parent Coffee Talk live via YouTube. We will open the meeting with Celebrations and will answer questions live throughout the meeting. To enter a celebration or ask a question, we will be making this Google Form Link live during the broadcast.

  • Click HERE to attend the coffee talk via YouTube.
  • Click HERE (during the broadcast) to share a celebration or ask a question that can be shared during the broadcast

Free and Reduced Meal Application – RESPONSE REQUESTED: Each year, we ask families to complete a Free and Reduced Price School Meals (FRPSM) application. We need every family to complete the form below for each student by Friday, September 11th. Even if you choose not to complete the FRPSM application, we still need the form completed for each student so that we can ensure every family had the opportunity to complete the application.

  • Click HERE to apply for Free and Reduced Price School Meals
  • Click HERE to complete the form for each student by 9/11/2020 to let us know you had the opportunity to apply for FRPSM.

Free Meals for All Students: We have great news!  Effective today, following USDA waivers, breakfast and lunch will be available for free to anyone 18 and under. No paperwork is required. This means that starting today, you can pick up free meals for your student Monday-Friday between 10:30am – 12:30pm at any of our school sites or from 5:00-6:00pm at 5 selected sites located geographically throughout Natomas. In addition, breakfast, lunch, supper, and snack weekend and holiday meals will be available for pickup at Friday distributions. At this moment, supper and snack are only available at the sites that qualify. https://natomasunified.org/usda-extends-free-meals-to-anyone-18-and-under/

Supply Donations: Thank you to our families who have already contributed to our School Supply Campaign. We are currently at 27% of our goal. These donations allow us to not only have individual supplies for students in their classroom when they return to campus, but also give us the ability to send home ongoing Distance Learning kits, like the incredible 8th grade Science kit highlighted in our celebrations. Click HERE to donate today.

Chromebook Safety Update: Please make sure your students have their chromebooks on a hard surface as a safety precaution – not on the carpet, blanket, or a pillow.

BASE Distance Learning Camps: We are taking reservations for BASE Distance Learning Camps! Please click HERE to reserve a spot in our BASE Distance Learning Camps. Space in each grade level Distance Learning Camp is limited to ensure social distancing – reserve your spot today! Full and partial scholarships may be available for qualifying families.

Counselor’s Corner: Each month our School Counselor, Jessica Krivoy, will be publishing a newsletter intended to spark ideas, provide support and offer reassurance.  Click HERE to view September’s edition on the Counselor’s Corner page.

High School Happenings:

Did you know that there are only 213 days until our High School welcomes in our first freshman class?! Next week’s video will take you through what learning looks like at Westlake Charter High School. Check out our featured video this week – it’s the Westlake Charter High School Overview video that was released in May 2020.

In case you missed it:

Distance Learning Feedback: Thank you to more than 200 families who have reached out to our help desk for support during our first 2 weeks of school! Because of our partnership, we were able to troubleshoot issues that may impact other families as well. One trend that we noticed is that families were in need of headphones so their students could hear instruction and improve focus. Click HERE to schedule a time to pick up headphones if your student has this need. Please continue to reach out to our team so we can collaborate on solutions. Click HERE for our help desk information.

Distance Learning Technical Help Desk – Now Open: Westlake Charter School has created a digital Help Desk to support our families during this time of Distance Learning. Our Help Desk can be contacted via chat, email or phone. For more information on how to contact our Help Desk, and our operating days and hours, please click HERE

Schedule for all WAVE Meetings and Coffee Talks: WAVE has all Meetings and Coffee Talks scheduled for the entire school year. We hope you will join us monthly for one or both meetings. Click HERE to learn more about WAVE and see the full schedule.

2021 Fireworks Booth: It is hard to think about the 2021 Fireworks Booth when it isn’t even Fall yet but we have to commit to a location soon. We need a new lead or team to make this happen. The Fireworks Booth usually brings in over $10,000 for WAVE which gives us the ability to host community building events like Science Night, donate items to the classrooms and more. Previous leads are available to train anyone interested so no experience is necessary. Please send an email to [email protected] to learn more!

Kudos: One of the most common questions asked during recent months has been “will the opening of the High School be delayed?” The answer is no! We are incredibly thankful for the Westlake Charter School Board’s commitment to opening next year. Thank you to our administration for continuing to make fantastic plans for our High School. Finally, thank you to our Westlake Charter School community for showing so much support for this exciting expansion!
