Our 3rd grade Explorers went on a field lesson to the State Capitol this week to support their learning about the branches of government. They even met with a Senator on the senate floor!

Our BASE director and AS Live coordinator presented our programs at the CCSA (California Charter School Association) conference this week. Other charter schools were excited to learn how to build their own dynamic after school program.

Our middle school students had a powerful start to their morning in the Advisory Fishbowl discussion groups. Students discussed bullying, what it looks like at WCS, and created action plans to help improve our school culture.

Call for Coaches: This spring, we’re launching FUTSAL in our athletics program! Futsal is similar to indoor soccer; games will be played in our gym. We’re looking for adult and high school futsal coaches; please spread the word to help us recruit futsal coaches as well as kickball supporters. Click HERE for more information and to sign up! Hearing/Vision: We will have our annual hearing and vision screening on March 18th and 19th in room D110. The screenings are for Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 8th grade students. Letters went home last week. If you would like your student to opt out, please email [email protected]

CAASPP Testing: Westlake Charter School’s 2019 CAASPP testing window is April 29th-May 31, 2019. Click HERE for our 2019 CAASPP Parent Notification Letter for information about CAASPP testing. To access this letter on our website, click the WCS tab to view our Academics page, the notification letter will be available on the sidebar on the right of the page.

Recess Equipment: All recess equipment is provided for students during recess. In order to keep items from being lost or stolen, please keep all balls and equipment home.

6th Grade Shadow Days: We are excited to have our current 5th graders get a glimpse of our amazing Middle School program with our 6th grade shadow days! 5th graders will shadow our current 6th graders through advisory, core classes, specialties, and electives on March 21 and 22. FREE Natomas 5K: Mark your calendar, April 27, 2019 for the Natomas 5K “Run for Their Future,”. All Westlake students AND staff will be sponsored by the The Inderkum family! This fun-for-all ages event will include vendors, entertainment, raffles, food, and so much more! Proceeds will be used by the Natomas Schools Foundation for college scholarships or computer grants to help students within Natomas Unified School District boundaries.

2019 International Festival: The International Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year and it is quickly approaching on April 6th from 3 – 7pm. Are you interested in hosting a cultural booth to share food, crafts or activities of your heritage? The event cannot happen without hosts to represent cultures from all around the world! The success of this event greatly depends on the support of our volunteers. Help is needed before, during and after the Festival as well as donating items. Coffee Talk: Please join us this Friday, March 22nd at 8:30am for a Coffee Talk with Mr. Eick and other WCS parents. We will meet in the Media Center to chat, drink coffee and enjoy some treats. Coffee Talks are a great time to learn more about what is currently happening at WCS, ask Administration questions, offer suggestions and meet other parents. We hope to see you there!

Healthy Living Night-New Date: Our Healthy Living Night has been rescheduled for Friday, April 26th at 6pm. This is going to be a fun and interactive night full of food, fitness and fun! Don’t forget to save the date for this fun evening for the entire family!

WAVE Board Elections: Are you interested in being part of the WAVE board? Joining the board is a great way to help plan the next year’s activities, continue building and strengthening our WCS community, lead fundraising and work with administration to support the school’s mission. All board positions for President, VP of Business Affairs, VP of Parent Participation, Treasurer and Secretary are coming up for elections in April.
