Erika Brunnmeier’s class seamlessly used their agreed upon classroom norms as they reviewed in groups what they already knew about place value.  We should use quiet voices, like in a coffee shop students said.  Classroom norms help students to feel included, safe, and know what to expect in class.

walkng

Both Walking Wednesday and Footloose Friday continue to have stellar numbers!  We have had over 300 walkers both days.  Keep on coming out to join the walking school bus! It is a great way to build community and a traffic-free alternative to getting to school!

Announcements:

For the Whole School

Back to School Night: Back to school night is a fantastic opportunity for our parent community to connect with our teachers for a strong start to the school year. We value this uninterrupted time for our parents and our teachers so much that our BASE staff is offering free childcare during both the Pebblewood and Del Paso Back to School Nights. To streamline the check-in process, please fill out this form to sign up for BASE that night.

NWEA Testing Schedule: NWEA testing begins Monday for both our Pebblewood and Del Paso campuses. In the past, we have tested at the end of each trimester. Why the change? The WCS Data Team has been learning from our partners at NWEA about best practices in administering this valuable test. By testing at the beginning of trimesters, we are sharing more accurate data with teachers at the start of the school year, so that goals and instruction can be more effectively personalized for students. Teachers will be eager to share the results of these efforts during conferences in November.

#ExplorerCampus: We are excited to report that our new #ExplorerCampus is moving along as expected! Click Here to see our latest progress. Within days we should start to see walls going up! As we plan for the move to the new campus, we will be working together to create drop off and pick up scenarios that keep traffic flowing, encourage healthy walking and biking to school and reduce the amount of traffic around the campus. Please stay tuned as we are working with the North Natomas Traffic Management Association (NNTMA) to make Westlake Charter a model Walking School!

Follow on Social Media: Explorers are Celebrating! Please follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to stay tuned into all the excitement that is happening at Westlake Charter!

For Del Paso:

Back to School Night: Families, please join us for our Del Paso Campus Back to School Night this Wednesday, August 24th. We are offering two sessions, which will be held in your student’s classroom. Session one will begin at 6:00 pm and session two will begin at 6:40 pm. You only need to attend one session in each of your children’s classrooms.

Back to School Night Parking: When parking for Back to School Night, families may park in any visitor space in the Westlake Parking Lot.  You may also park in open parking spaces in the NP3 lot.  No cars may park in the middle lane of the NP3 parking lot as they will have staff that needs to access those spaces.

Parking lot: Families please remember to bring your placards in your car for all students you are picking up.  We will continue to give out reminders for any missing placards; however, starting September 6th all cars with missing placards will be asked to park in a visitor spot and check ID in the office.  Thank you for working in partnership with us to make our Westlake Charter School dismissal as safe as possible!

Wednesday Early Out:

  • Kindergarten – 12:45pm
  • 1st-4th – 1:15pm

1st-4th grade parents can enter the parking lot for pick up at 1:00pm, once Kindergarten dismissal has finished.  This allows all kindergarten parents to safely enter the parking lot to retrieve their student.  Any 1st-4th grade parent entering the parking lot prior to 1:00pm on Wednesdays will be asked to pull through the parking lot to join the back of the dismissal line.  Thank you for your help in keeping our dismissal safe for all students

For Pebblewood:

BASE:  Students that are not picked up by 3:00pm will be escorted to BASE to check-in.  If you do not want you student to attend BASE, please fill out the Walking Permission Form or pick up before 3:00pm.

Back to School Night: Please mark your calendars for our Pebblewood Back to School Night on Wednesday, August 31st from 6:00-7:30pm.

Teacher Websites: Don’t forget to head over to our school website at https://westlakecharter.com/teachers/, to find your student’s teachers’ websites. Teachers update their sites often, so don’t forget to head over at least once per week.  Teachers include a homework calendar, school information, and keep you informed of what is happening in the classrooms on their websites.

Supplies: Westlake Charter is committed to ensuring all students have the materials they need in their classroom. We budget $25 per-student, per year for those general supplies. To help offset some of these costs to the school, we ask parents to donate (instead of running from store-to-store buying supplies off of a pre-determined list).  Parents can donate through the PayPal link on our website.
